IEFSEM – BAS Bulgaria announces a call for papers and invites scholars to contribute to the international conference Heroic Art and Socialist Realism: Memory and Representations of the Socialist Past in Bulgaria being a part of international project Heroes We Love supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

What is common to all the countries in ‘New Europe’ is their hurried and resolute rejection of the heritage of Socialist Realism after 1989. Such artworks have for that reason been researched only sporadically and partially. How do we understand monuments and artworks of the Socialist Realism canon nowadays, what can we do with them, and why do we love to hate them?

The conference will focus mainly on the case of Bulgaria as one of the most prominent examples of heroic art venues in Eastern Europe. Although monuments and memorial sites built in the period 1944-1989 will be placed in the spotlight, other artworks of that period will also be taken into consideration. Various aspects of the representation and memory of major historical events will be addressed, particularly those related to the antifascist resistance and the partisan guerrilla movement during the Second World War, as well as other realms of collective memory (e.g. the national liberation struggle of the late 19th century, the communist movement in the first half of the 20th century, the September Uprising in 1923). The conference will further engage in issues related to the representations of the memory of the socialist period such as the public attitudes towards the monuments of the communist regime, the debates about their protection and preservation or dismantlement and destruction, and the changing modes of remembrance.

If you are interested in taking part in the conference, please, send your name, institutional affiliation, and paper abstract (up to 200 words) to nikolai.vukov@gmail.com and svetla.kazalarska@gmail.com by 15 February 2016, at the latest. Presentations will be 15 minutes in length. The conference language is English.
